Now I see this clearly. My whole life is pointed in one direction. There never has been a choice for me.

Taxi Driver
(1976)

One of the most celebrated actors of his generation, Robert de Niro has brought to life a number of memorable characters, not least the misunderstood Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver.

The font of the poster is inspired by how the title appears in the credit sequence while the color scheme is taken from the famous yellow, black and white checked cabs of New York City.

The film is about lonliness and isolation in a society full of scum. The story uses a taxi driver as a metaphor for this, which has some irony to it because even in a city full of people, it can feel like the most lonely place on earth. Travis is in constant motion, moving amongst these people, but never connecting.

Fuelled by his isolation and desperation, at the climax of the film, after a rampage through a brothel, a severely injured Travis turns his gun on himself but is out of ammunition. When the police arrive, Bickle stares at them and smiles, pointing his finger like a gun at his head, resulting in this iconic image.

To further emphasis the theme of isolation, the image is placed awkwardly on the bottom of the poster, almost on the outside looking in, juxtaposed with the circle at the centre and the writing in. This is the logo from the films presidential campaign badge saying 'we are the people', again emphasises Travis's isolation and has a irony to it, as the one women he has a desire to connect with works for the campaign.

Trivia -
  • The cab Travis drove was Checker. They stopped production after 1982 and the last one in New York City was retired in 1999.
  • Paul Schrader wrote the script for "Taxi Driver" in five days. As he was writing, he kept a loaded gun on his desk for motivation and inspiration.
