GUERNSEY, C.I. - By recycling Hollywood’s iconography in the form of movie posters, Matt Warren has created a series of drawings in 3B pencil which reflect the essence of chosen films selected for their relevance in pop culture.
He has long been engaged with the mythology of Hollywood, creating a hybrid of art and cinema that has become an important strand within his practice, deconstructing the cinematic experience in order to critique the construct of cinema and the stereotypes they represent.
Studying for his MFA in Los Angeles, and subsequently working in the film industry, has allowed him access to this subject matter while being able to explore the luminary obsessions Hollywood is known for. Making his return to Guernsey in early 2012, Warren has since been working on an ongoing series of drawings that are a natural evolution from his past work.
Created through his passion for film, art and illustration, his latest series of pencil drawings are alternative movie posters of cult and classic films. The design and composition of the posters are influenced by the films characters and themes, and draw inspiration from the movies color palette and imagery. Each poster dissects the films narrative, and chooses a singular image which frames the film in a fresh way depicting its spirit and cult status.
The aim of a poster is to promote a product and since Hollywood invented its highly lucrative star system, it has become just another mechanism in the studios high performance publicity machine. While aware of the films brand, Warren’s posters offer a unique alternative, with each pencil mark being visible, asserting their originality in comparison to the mass-produced, often generic, official poster.
